Gore Vidal’s Familiar Quotations

Gore Vidal never pussyfooted around

In lieu of a proper tribute to Gore Vidal, the writer and public intellectual who passed away today, I suggest everyone nominate his/her favorite nuggets of Vidal wisdom.

Nominations for top three:

1) Never pass up an opportunity to have sex or appear on TV.

2) As I looked back over my life, I realized that I enjoyed nothing–not art, not sex–more than going to the movies.

3) Andy Warhol is the only genius I have ever met with an IQ of 60.

Your nominations? And how great that when Vidal passed, his play The Best Man was in revival on Broadway. Sic transit Gore mundi.

  1. Gary Kramer says:

So many to choose from. I always cite, “A good deed never goes unpunished.” So that’s my top pick, but how can you resist:
“The four most beautiful words in our common language: I told you so.”
“Whenever a friend succeeds, a little something in me dies.”

And his crack about the Ronald Reagan library and a coloring book was priceless. But I can’t remember it exactly.

So true! My movie memories can last forever.I can tell you who starred , who directed where and when I saw that particular picture I can even quote dialoge. Art not so much and sex …. sorry some of my partners are very forgettable
