In 1961, when the celebrated and influential comedy team of Mike Nichols and Elaine May went their separate ways, Nichols went on to work in the mainstream — Barefoot in the Park on stage, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? on screen — while May bobbed along in the eddies. He made The Graduate; she made its lesser-known companion piece, The Heartbreak Kid. He directed popular movies such as Primary Colors and The Bird Cage. She wrote them — among many other scripts. And doctored who knows how many more.
This weekend, the Writer’s Guild West will honor May with its Laurel Award. And to celebrate the event, a valentine to a favorite writer/director recently making a lot of news.
