Mickey Rooney 1920–2014
As America’s most popular teenage actor Mickey Rooney had the ability to bounce from maudlin to madcap — and vice-versa — often rebounding in the same scene. He started working in vaudeville at 2 and didn’t stop until his death on Sunday, making him perhaps the only movie actor to make films in every decade since the 1920s.
Read my hastily-written appreciation here. If I could choose three Rooney performances to watch right now, they would be A Midsummer Night’s Dream, National Velvet and The Human Comedy. My daughter wants to put in a good word for The Black Stallion.
Your choices?

Those three performances are fine choices. I am also pleased that Mickey Rooney was included, as he should have been, among the cavalcade of stars in It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
After failing to note and pay tribute to Shirley Temple at the time of her death, I’m sorry to see that President Obama seems also to be ignoring Mickey Rooney’s passing. The “final exit” of this giant star deserves national recognition. We may have passed a century mark, but Mickey Rooney is a world historical figure and it’s important and would have been appropriate to remember that.
