Robin Williams and that little spark of magic

“You’re only given a little spark of magic,” Robin Williams liked to say, “and you mustn’t lose it.”
Tragically, he lost it yesterday.
The peripatetic comedian and actor was a human spark plug conducting his particular brand of voltage to power performances on screens large and small and stages where he performed stand-up and Samuel Beckett. Williams gave the impression of being a ton of fun crammed into a 16-ounce Ziploc, desperate to get out– which is probably why his voice work as the Genie in Aladdin was so liberating.
Williams was the 20th-century iteration of Pierrot, the sad clown who capered about, tear in eye, inevitably losing the girl — as his characters do/did in Mrs. Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting, What Dreams May Come and The Fisher King.

The news coverage of Robin Williams’ death, although predictable in its frenzy and scope, has been incredibly depressing and superficial. To me, hearing the words “depression” and “suicide” thrown around like loose, small denomination pocket change, bereft of meaning and significance, is pretty horrible. I think I liked Williams best in Jumanji, Dead Again and Mork and Mindy (early days). He was a fine actor, but the manic comedy part quickly became kind of show-off-y and irritating, unlike the work of his inspiration Jonathan Winters.
