Shirley Temple Black 1928-2014
Shirley Temple Black modeled pluck and resilience on screen and in her post-Hollywood career was a most resilient and plucky of women, philosophical about her father having misappropriated the millions she made as a child star, outspoken about women being proactive about breast cancer and by all reports (including that of Henry Kissinger), a diligent and hardworking diplomat.
Here is what I wrote about her today. Lower the flags on the Good Ship Lollipop to half mast and savor her dry humor: “I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph.”
My favorite Shirley Temple movie: The Little Princess (1939), in which a rich girl is reduced to servant girl and for the most part stoic about it. Yours?

I love The Little Princess and as your other correspondent says, what a lovely beginning to an appreciation. Shirley’s passing feels so momentous. I always knew it would. But I’m astonished that it has been so quietly noted, i.e., no flags at half-staff, official statements from on high. An era is really over.
