Where have the movies made you want to travel?

The first movie that made me want to travel was William Wyler’s Roman Holiday, in which a princess poses as a commoner in order to really see the city. I wanted to zoom by Vespa through the Eternal City, feed my hand to the Bocca de Verita and dance on the barges moored on the Tiber.
The next movie that made me make sure my passport was current was Michelangelo Antonioni’s The Passenger, in which a journalist, Don Draper style, takes the identity of a dead man. I wanted to thread down Barcelona’s Passeig de Grazia and get lost in the undulations of a Gaudi building.
Most recently the movie that inspired me to buy an airplane ticket was Werner Herzog’s Encounters at the End of the World (my review here), set among the eccentrics and visionaries of McMurdo, Antarctica, people too preoccupied with thinking about the origins and possible endings of the world to worry about something so insignificant as identity.

I am sure seeing APARTMENT ZERO helped develop my interest in wanting to go to Argentina. Seeing other films from that country–NIGHT WATCH, TESTOSTERONE, SMOKERS ONLY, SIDEWALLS, only increased my desire to go dance in tango bars, drink mate with gauchos and climb the obelisk.
Any movie filmed in Italy makes me wanna go back.Great scenes in movies sucjh as “Eat,Love,Pray”,”Kinky Boots”,and “Under the Tuscan Sun”. Dustin Hoffman in Last Chance Harvey convinced me I need to get to London ASAP.However after seeing “The Impossible” last night I no longer wish to visit South east Asia
Mostly they make me want to travel in my dreams, which always amplify and improve the experience of real world travel. I always like seeing LA, Philadelphia and Monte Carlo in movies, though.
Woody Allen’s “Manhattan” convinced me to move from Ohio to Manhattan. Despite the real city’s failure to be in black-and-white, or to be accompanied by a Gershwin soundtrack, it was a good choice.
