“When you look at American movies, it’s like something apocalyptic has happened, like a parallel universe, a man’s world.” So says Walt Hickey of fivethirtyeight.com of the skewed ratio of men to women on screen (roughly 71 to 29),  symptomatic of the ratio of men to women behind the camera (roughly 91 to 9).

As I write this, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is investigating apparent gender bias in Hollywood, subject of a piece I wrote about today, and as Hickey implies, it’s not just an employment issue. It’s about unequal representation in the stories and dreams of America’s largest export.

One question I ask is, what would equality look like on screen?
