Creed: Rocky passes the torch — and the boxing gloves
It is not a reboot or a rethink or a retread. Creed — Ryan Coogler’s extension of the Rocky franchise to a new generation while honoring the old — is a splendid, deeply satisfying film on its own, with added resonance for those familiar with the prior six.
Both Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson are lovely as the boxer and his girlfriend, while Sylvester Stallone delivers his best performance since the original Rocky 39 years as countless rounds ago.
Here’s something that wrote itself. It’s about Philadelphia’s love for Rocky. And expectations that a statue of Creed will soon join the one of Himself at the bottom of the Art Museum steps.
Question: Is there any other film hero so intimately linked with one place and one location as Rocky is with the Philadelphia Museum of Art? Another way of asking: After King Kong and the Empire State Building and Harry Lime and the Vienna Ferris Wheel, who and where?
If King Kong personifies NY, Harry Lime Vienna and Rocky/Creed Philadelphia, which movie hero personifies your city? https://t.co/d0WIt6gslo
