Shelter from the storm: What to watch during Sandy
Their hatches battened down, readers and friends ask what they should watch during Sandy, the storm battering the East coast. Three top-of-head responses: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s I Know Where I’m Going! Robert Zemeckis’ Cast Away, and Bronwen Hughes’ Forces of Nature. All about characters who learn to respect Mother Nature instead of trying to outwit her.
What are you watching? What would you suggest?

Moonrise kingdom!!!!! Young love and a hurricane.
EYE OF THE STORM with Judy Davis, Geoffrey Rush and Charlotte Rampling is on On Demand. That will be our selection tonight if the power doesn’t go out.
Key Largo–of course!
Totally agree with Key Largo. The storm is soooo prominent that it’s almost a major character in the film. It cuts off the characters, allowing the plot to proceed. It illustrates the tension between the characters, and the storm’s end represents the plot’s resolution. It was the first film I thought of when Sandy started her way to NJ.
Although “Twister” was not a film about a hurricane, I did think of one scene from it. In the midst of a storm, Jo watches as the twister lifts livestock into the air.
Jo: [cow flies by in the storm] Cow.
[cow flies by in the storm]
Jo: ‘Nother cow.
Bill: Actually I think that was the same one.
Love that scene.
“Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”!
