When hoop dreams become hoop realities

When I read that Mark Cuban, principal of Landmark Theaters and Magnolia Pictures as well as the owner of the NBA franchise the Dallas Mavericks, was considering drafting Baylor University phenom Britney Griner for his team, thus making her the first female in the NBA, I thought many things.
I thought: Ballsiest move (pun unintended)by a club owner since Branch Rickey (no relation) recruited Jackie Robinson for the Brooklyn Dodgers (subject of the forthcoming biopic, 42, out next week).
I thought: Marketing bonanza.
I thought: Didn’t a woman try out for the NBA in the 1970s? (Yes, UCLA player Ann Meyers tried out for the Indiana Pacers in 1979).
I thought: How great would it be if pro basketball were no longer a game that men played and women watched.
I thought of Gina Prince-Bythewood’s lovely and criminally underknown 2000 film Love & Basketball, starring Sanaa Lathan as a female hoops star who establishes a pro career in Europe prior to the establishment of the WNBA. For Lathan’s character, a shot at the NBA is only a hoop dream.
Your thoughts? Alternatively, your favorite basketball movie? Besides Steve James superlative documentary Hoop Dreams, mine are Love & Basketball and White Men Can’t Jump, the latter because it’s a terrific movie that gets a huge assist from the fact that Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson are great players.
I have to give a shout-out to the 20-min film Gina Prince-Bythewood made (with a scene in the basketball gym) about sex, relationships,love, friendship, HIV, and gender roles. It is amazing:

I think Cuban’s idea (it’s difficult to believe that it’s an actual plan) is pretty dumb, both as a sports idea (it’s unlikely to improve his franchise or trigger a trend at other teams) and a marketing idea (it’s unlikely to lead to a substantial or permanent increase in game attendance and it’s a little sad to subject a novelty player to freak status; I’m sure the money would assuage the player’s embarrassment, however). It’s difficult to be impressed or that interested. Another person trying to sell another thing. My daughter kind of likes him on Shark Tank, though. White Men Can’t Jump is ok but it’s no Tin Cup.
