Where have all the standards gone? The Oscar shortlist of eligible songs, 2012

The honor roll of Academy Award-wining songs includes standards such as “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “The Last Time I Saw Paris” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”
Do you see a standard on this year’s short list of eligible songs? I don’t see it — I mean, apart from Adele, who can sing “Skyfall”? What I do see is two novelty songs I enjoy in what might be called an “It’s Hard Out There For a Pimp” kind of way: “Ladies of Tampa” from Magic Mike. And “Sambola: The International Dance Craze” from Damsels in Distress.

The better question is why does the category even still exist? Outside of animated films and an original (usually subpar) song added to the adapation of a stage musical, there aren’t enough movies with truly integral original songs for there to be a point.
